Sungai Brantas yang letaknya di JaTim adalah sungai terpanjang ke-2 di Jawa setelah Bengawan Solo. Disebut seperti itu sebab sungai ini berhulu di sebuah Desa dangan Sumber Brantas, Kec. Bumiaji, Kota Baru. Aliran Sungai Brantas bersumber dari simpanan air Gunung Arjuno yang mengalir ke , Blitar, Kediri,Tulungagung,, Jombang, Malang dan Mojokerto.

Pada masa kerajaan-kerajaan Hindu- Budha di Jawa, Sungai Brantas menjadi lalu lintas perdagangan dunia. Sungai Brantas mempunyai panjang sungai utama sepanjang 320 km dengan Daerah Aliran Sungai (DAS) mencapai 11.800 km² atau 1/4 dari keseluruhan luas keseluruhan Provinsi Jatim. Kawasan DAS ini sudah lama dimanfaatkan sebagai area pertanian dari abad ke delapan.

Harta Karun Tersembunyi

Sejak dahulu, Sungai Brantas menjadi jalur tranportasi untuk lalu lalang kapal-kapal dagang dan peperang. Banyak pelabuhan didirikan disepanjang aliran sungainya untuk mengakomodir kapal-kapal saudagar dari luar Pulau Jawa. Pada jaman Belanda, Mataram dan VOC pernah satu kali menyerang Istana Trunojoyo di daerah Kediri lewat jalur air dan berakibat pada tenggelamnya salah satu kapal di Sungai Brantas.

Banyak kapal-kapal gede lainnya yang tenggelam di Sungai Brantas dan menengkaramkan seluruh harta benda yang mereka bawa. Kejadian-kejadian tragis pada jaman dulu selanjutnya menjadi berkah bagi para penambang emas. Bahkan sering mereka menemukan berbagai jenis koin emas serta barang berharga lainnya yang diperkirakan berasal dari kapal yang tenggelam.

Kerajaan Ratu Buaya Putih

Terdapat cerita mengenai sosok buaya putih bernama Badug Seketi di Kecamatan Kras Kediri. Mulanya dahulu Badung Seketi memiliki hubungan baik dengan penduduk sekitar. Setiap kali ada hajatan, penduduk selalu meminta keperluannya dipenuhi oleh sang Badung Seketi. Konon hubungan baik masih terus terjadi hingga tahun 1970an.

Tak sedikit film-film lama bergenre horror yang mengadopsi tema tentang misteri buaya putih. Hanya sedikit yang tahu, ternyata kisah ngeri itu diangkat dari cerita masyarakat di Sungai Brantas. Semenjak dulu tidak sedikit tumbal nyawa yang terpaksa harus ditumbalkan untuk meredam amarah dari sang Ratu Buaya Putih. Pada thun 1009, Mpu Baradah berkali-kali tercatat menumbalkan orang ketika memecah Kerajaan Kahuripan menjadi Kerajaan Panjalu dan Kerajaan Jenggala.

Cerita mengenai keberadaan buaya putih juga dijumpai dalam tulisan-tulisan yang ditinggalkan oleh Pemerintah Kolonial Belanda pada rentang waktu 1836-1876. Ketika itu, pembangunan jembatan lama yang membelah Sungai Brantas di Kediri mengalami masalah. Tapi setelah tumbal dijatuhkan pembangunan akhirnya dapat dilanjutkan dan rampung.
