Kabupaten Ponorogo diketahui dengan panggilan Kota Reog atau Bumi Reog sebab wilayah ini adalah wilayah asal dari kesenian Reog. Ponorogo dikenal juga jadi Kota Santri sebab mempunyai banyak ponpes, salah satunya yang populer ialah Pondok Kekinian Darussalam Gontor yang terdapat di desa Gontor, kecamatan Mlarak.
Tiap tahun pada bulan Suro (Muharram), Kabupaten Ponorogo membuat satu serangkaian acara berbentuk pesta rakyat yakni Grebeg Suro. Pada pesta rakyat ini diperlihatkan beberapa jenis seni serta adat, salah satunya Festival Reog Nasional, Pawai Lintas Riwayat serta Kirab Pusaka, serta Larungan Risalah Doa di Telaga Ngebel.

Riwayat kesenian reog datang dari narasi rakyat. Narasi ini diambil mengenai pemberontakan Ki Ageng Kutu. Dikisahkan jika Ki Ageng Kutu yang disebut seorang abdi kerajaan di Kertabumi pada era ke-15. Dia lakukan pemberontakan sebab murka akan pemerintahan raja yang dipengaruhi kuat dari istri raja majapahit yang datang dari cina. Dia lantas tinggalkan sang raja serta membangun perguruan bela diri.

Tetapi ki Ageng Kutu sadar jika pasukannya begitu kecil untuk menantang pasukan kerajaan, karena itu dia membuat pergelaran seni Reog yang disebut sindiran pada raja Kertabumi serta kerajaannya.
Ketenaran Reog Ki Ageng Kutu pada akhirnya membuat Kerajaan Kertabhumi ambil aksi serta menyerang perguruannya, pemberontakan oleh warok secara cepat ditangani, serta perguruan dilarang untuk meneruskan edukasi akan warok. Tetapi murid-murid Ki Ageng kutu masih meneruskannya dengan diam-diam. Walau bagaimanapun, kesenian Reognya sendiri masih dibolehkan untuk dipentaskan sebab telah jadi atraksi terkenal antara warga, tetapi alur ceritanya mempunyai jalur baru dimana ditambah lagi karakter-karakter dari narasi rakyat Ponorogo yakni Kelono Sewandono, Dewi Songgolangit, serta Sri Genthayu.

Versus sah jalan cerita Reog Ponorogo sekarang ialah narasi mengenai Raja Ponorogo yang punya niat melamar putri Kediri, Dewi Ragil Kuning, tetapi ditengah-tengah perjalanan dia dihentikan oleh Raja Singabarong dari Kediri. Pasukan Raja Singabarong terbagi dalam merak serta singa, sedang dari faksi Kerajaan Ponorogo Raja Kelono serta Wakilnya Bujang Anom, dikawal oleh warok (pria kenakan pakaian hitam-hitam dalam tariannya), serta warok ini mempunyai pengetahuan hitam mematikan. Semua tariannya adalah tarian perang di antara Kerajaan Kediri serta Kerajaan Ponorogo, serta mengadu pengetahuan hitam di antara keduanya, beberapa penari dalam kondisi kerasukan waktu mementaskan tariannya.
